The fear of being uncomfortable is so debilitating.
But overcoming fear is a superpower that every human has the ability to unlock. It’s just a mindset change. Navigating the journey of small business ownership is like having to do something new as a teenager—it takes courage to embrace the discomfort of the unknown.
Last night, my daughter Sophie reminded me of this valuable lesson. At 13, she’s learning that stepping into the unknown, be it singing in front of hundreds of people dressed as Scuttle, or a new sport like volleyball, is essential for growth.
(Guys… she killed it in that play though…)
We spoke about the importance of facing fear—not as a sign of inability, but as an opportunity to discover and thrive in new challenges.
She is so damn brave and blows me away constantly. (Proud daddy moment)
Here’s what entrepreneurs can learn from a 13-year-old’s wisdom:
- Watch Yourself:
- Embrace Discomfort:
- Recognize Growth:
- Lean into Fear:
- Be Tenacious:
Become an observer of your reactions to new challenges. Your mindset can be your biggest asset or your most significant barrier.
Let go of the fear of not being “good enough” and replace it with a curiosity for the unfamiliar.
Small successes lay the foundation for love and passion—just like Sophie with volleyball, each step forward can lead to unexpected joy.
Acknowledge it, feel it, but don’t let it dictate your actions. On the other side of fear lies your potential.
It’s the entrepreneurs who dare to get uncomfortable, those who push past their fears, who truly shape their destiny.
As leaders, parents, and entrepreneurs, it’s our role to not just face our fears but to jump headfirst into them. After all, the growth we desire lies in the work we’re most hesitant to do.
